Uses of Pictello in Education

Pictello is a useful multi-purpose AT application that can be used on iPods and iPads to create talking photo albums and social stories. In particular it can be quit euseful for students with Autism across the curriculum. The application uses digital photos,  voice narration and text to tell or explain something. It could be used to demonstrate or explain curriculum content, social skills or functional skills for students. It provides independent use, repetition and practice. Five examples of uses for Pictello with students could include:

Five educational uses for Pictello:
1. Social Studies - a. Create a social story or talking photo album of a student visit or class trip to an historical site such as Province House or Citadel Hill in downtown Halifax to show to a student prior to a class visit.  You could use Pictello to introduce or review important historical artefacts and/or sites to students.

b. Alternately, Pictello could be used by students to create an essay or history report on a class visit to an historical site to demonstrate their learning.

2. Language Arts - Create an original narrative story in a genre being studies i.e. mystery, science fiction, realistic, etc.

3. Science - a. Create a how-to Pictello for an upcoming science lab experiment to show students in advance of the lab.

b. A student could use Pictello to create a lab report for an experiment instead of a writing a lab report.

4. Functional Skills: Library - Create a story of how a library visit would look like in advance of going on a library visit ex. how to get a library card, how to use a library card, how to locate books in the library, how to return books, etc.

5. Functional Skills: Grocery Shopping  - a. Create a story explaining how to go grocery shopping to show how the aisles are arranged in a grocery store, how the prices are listed, how the cashiers work, how to pay for a grocery order, how to pack the bags, etc.

b. Students could use Pictello as a report to show how their visit to a grocery store and to explain what they learned during the visit.
